Designing a Great eBook Cover Can Be Done For Free!

A good (or bad) ecover can make or break your ebook sales. If there is one thing guaranteed to drop your conversion rate, it's a sloppy looking ecover.

And there really is no excuse for producing a bad ecover. A few years ago, you had the choice of making your own, or paying a designer. But now you have access to online free ebook cover creators. There are several different ways that you can get a good looking cover for your eBook:

  • Pay a graphic designer (generally in the $50-$100 range)
  • Make one yourself
  • Purchase and use a photoshop action script
  • Use an online cover maker

I used a FREE ebook cover maker to create the image below. Time taken was about 2-3 minutes. I didn't bother with uploading my own graphics or taking any time over formatting the text, yet it still looks nice.

The website that I used was MyCoverMaker.com

There are enough stock images for you to use, that you should find some that will suit your cover. Or if not, then you can upload and use your own.

There are 5 cover styles for the free subscribers (no opt in required). Those that pay for a sub (under $10 per month) have access to a lot more cover styles and can create unlimited covers.

For those that just need to make one or two ecovers, the free access is all that you will need. Results are very professional, although you may want to optimize the image file once you download it.

I found it could easily be compressed to a smaller file size without dropping any clarity. However, this isn't absolutely neccessary, the ecover image shown on this page was originally 25kb, which I reduced to 17kb.

Free, subscription, or PAYG

The free option gives you 5 different cover styles, plenty of stock images to use, and is suitable for most people who have a one off cover to create.

The subscription option is $9, which gives you access to a lot more cover styles, and you can create as many covers as you need. This would be a good choice for those people wh have 3, 4 or more covers to create. Also, if you are selling DVDs, then you get access to the DVD case covers.

PAYG (Pay As You Go) will give you access to all the extra features of the paid subscription. You just pay for each cover that you create. The cost is $3.95 per cover (compare that to an avergae of $50 for a cover from a graphic designer).

This would be a good choice for those who have several covers to create, and want a wider choice of cover styles, graphics etc.
